Artist Spotlight: Prince Indah- King of Ohangla

Evance Ochieng Opiyo, widely known as Prince Indah, is one of Kenya’s most influential voices in Ohangla and Afro-Rhumba. Born on August 9, 1994, in Murumba Village, Siaya County, he has become known for his unique ability to blend traditional Luo rhythms with contemporary soundscapes. His storytelling, vocal depth, and musical authenticity have earned him a devoted following and cemented his place in Kenya’s evolving music scene.

Prince Indah’s journey is rooted in resilience. After leaving school due to financial constraints, he joined the Ramogi Ohangla Rhumba Band led by his uncle, Emma Jalamo. What began as a role playing drums and shakers eventually grew into backup singing and curtain-raising performances. By 2014, he released his debut album featuring fan favorites such as Cinderella and Nyakisumu Pt. 1, later founding his own group—the Malaika Ohangla Rhumba Band and expanding his catalog with albums like Tenda Wema and Weche Hera.

Today, Prince Indah continues to rise as a multi-genre force, merging Ohangla’s traditional pulse with modern Afro-Rhumba influences. His collaborations with artists like Bahati and Khaligraph Jones have broadened his reach, with the hit Adhiambo showcasing his ability to blend styles and connect with diverse audiences. As his sound continues to evolve, Prince Indah remains a powerful ambassador of Kenyan musical heritage and contemporary innovation.
